Have you ever wondered what the letters and numbers on your car’s automatic transmissionmean? You’re not alone! Many folks don’t know the answer to this question, so we’re here to provide a guide

In this blog post by Cutter CDJR Pearl City , we’ll go over the meaning of the most common letters and numbers you’ll see on an automatic gear shift. By the end, you’ll be a true gearhead and know exactly what to do when shifting gears!

Automatic Gearbox – An Introduction!

An automatic gearbox contains sensors and hydraulics that enable it to change the gear according to the situation. You don’t have to apply the brake or press the clutch when changing gears. Your left foot is generally free since you’ll use your right foot to operate the accelerator and brake pedals!

The letters P, R, N, and D represent the most common gear on the automatic transmission gearbox!

1. P – Park

This is the gear you use when your car is stopped, and you want to keep it from moving. It’s also used when you’re first starting off from a stop. To engage ‘park,’ put your car in neutral, then hold down the button on your gear shift and move it into the ‘park’ position.

2. R – Reverse

‘Reverse’ is the gear you use when you want your car to move backward. To engage reverse, you need to press the brake pedal, then put your gear stick in the ‘R’ position. Now, you can slowly release the brakes; your car will start moving in the reverse direction.

3. N – Neutral

Neutral is the gear you use when you’re stopped and don’t want your car to move. It’s also the gear you use when you’re first starting from a stop.

4. D – Drive

Drive is the gear you use when you want your car to move forward. This gear is mostly used in stop-and-go traffic since you don’t have to shift gears. In the ‘D’ position, your car automatically shifts the gear, and you can control the speed with the brake pedal.

5. L – Low

Low is a gear you can use when driving at slower speeds. It can help your car save fuel and wear and tear on the engine. It’s an alternative for the first gear in automatic cars!

6. S – Sports

Sports mode is a gear you can use when driving at higher speeds. It can help your car perform better and give you more control over the vehicle.
