Tires connect your vehicle to the road. Without them, you would be stuck in place. Tires are also vital for safety; if they burst in the middle of a drive, it could lead to an accident that might result in serious injury or death. Thus, it’s vital to take care of your tires and learn how to identify any potential problems with them before something bad happens. All drivers should follow these five easy yet important tire care tips.
1) Keep Your Tire Pressure at the Proper Level
Proper tire pressure is important because it affects your car’s handling and gas mileage. Check your vehicle owner’s manual to determine what PSI works best for your car’s tires. You can also check your tires regularly with a gauge to ensure they are properly inflated. If one of them seems low, check your owner’s manual to see if it can be repaired or replaced.
2) Rotate Your Tires Every 6 Months
To ensure that your tires last, you should rotate them every six months. You can do this yourself or bring it into a dealership service center, and they will be happy to help with this.
Tire rotation is easy; just remove each wheel from its place and put it in another location.
This will ensure that each tire gets equal wear on its treads. If you don’t rotate them, one tire will likely wear out quicker than the others. Rotating your tires every six months will help keep them in better shape for longer periods.
3) Monitor Tread Depth
Your tires must be replaced when the tread depth reaches below 2/32″. You can check this by using a penny. Place the penny upside down into several different grooves of your tire’s tread. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it is time for a new set of tires.
4) Avoid Potholes
Driving into potholes can cause damage to your tires and even result in a flat. If you have to hit a pothole, do so at an angle rather than head-on. If you can, try to go around them. If that’s not possible, slow down and drive over them as smoothly as possible.
5) Refrain from Overloading Your Vehicle
This is another leading cause of tire damage. When you overload your vehicle, the tires are forced to work harder and thus wear down more quickly. This decreases the life of your tires.
Be sure to check your vehicle’s weight limit before loading up your car. If you are over the weight limit, you will probably need to remove some of that cargo.
